This work and its variants, exhibited at the Muse d'Orsay in Paris, represent the most ambitious paintings that Degas engaged in with the theme of dance. In the picture we see a range of different women, ballerinas and their mothers. Jules Perrot, a famous ballet master, leads the class. The scene takes place in a rehearsal room in the old Paris Opra, which had
